The role:

The job-holder is expected to help maintain and support the Linux server environment.

The role forms part of the global shared technology services (GSTS) for hosting services in technology operations. The Technical Analyst (TA) will work to deliver and maintain infrastructure services and solutions to high levels of quality. The TA will be required to work with people across multiple IT functions, multiple global IT teams, business users and 3rd party customers and suppliers.

The TA will be a technical point of contact for help and guidance for general queries and support during major incidents.  The STA will also be responsible for the day to day running of the environment and continual improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Senior Technical Analyst for Linux
  • Help document procedures and keeping service diagrams and related material up to date.
  • Provide technical expertise in all areas in the Linux server environments
  • Ensure the required level of end to end performance of the Linux Service is achieved
  • Help advise on future developments and technology trends in relation to scope of Linux server operations
  • Collaborate with members of GSTS (Group Share Technical Service), to ensure service is delivered to all relevant Opcos. Ensure involved in knowledge transfers with other members of virtual teams.
  • Liaise with Architect teams as the Linux SME, to develop architecture and standards
  • Liaise with Group Engineering teams to support
  • Assist in the development and ongoing management of an Linux roadmap

Operational Activities

  • Agree and deliver to agreed service levels
  • Point of technical escalation for major incidents/service complaints
  • Risk identification and mitigation; service related IT general controls identified in Chapter 9
  • Incident, Problem and Change Management activities both internally and 3rd parties processes
  • Continuous Service Improvement:
  • Help to ensure that performance monitoring, capacity planning and maintenance take place to maintain a high degree of service and availability for applicable service environments.
  • Ensure IT management is correctly advised on how to cost effectively match capacity and demand
  • Constantly seeking service improvement and opportunities to drive business value
  • Assist to deliver metrics at the agreed reporting cycle

You will have:


The ideal candidate will need to have good knowledge of Linux administration to include the following:

  • Experience of maintaining rpm based Linux operating systems in an enterprise environment for 24x7 operation
  • Understanding of init and systemV systems
  • Automation and scripting capabilities
  • Good understanding of infrastructure principles such as TCP/IP, DNS, TCP, SMTP, SSH, etc.
  • Experience of physical and virtual servers
  • Configuring and maintaining servers to host various applications and databases e.g. Oracle/MySQL databases and Java applications
  • Understanding of Fibre Channel SAN storage


  • Experience with NetBackup client backups and restores
  • Web admin administration LAMP stack in particular
  • Experience of automation tools e.g. puppet, chef, spacewalk, satellite
  • Experience of Virtualisation Technologies including VMware and OVM
  • Experience of other Microsoft Server operating systems
